Love it or hate it, Friday the 13th is a thing for some people. It might be just as unlucky to you as every other day in your life but for people with Friggartriskaidekaphobia (trying saying that drunk, or even sober for that matter) the struggle is real. Friggartriskaidekaphobia is a real condition that results in a fear of Friday the 13th. For those of you that do suffer from this condition, fear not, as THIS place in America can cure your phobia for a small fee.
Where did this tradition even come from?
The origins of the association of Friday the 13th and bad luck are hazy at best. Some believe it became a thing due to public hangings taking place on a Friday and your climb up 13 steps towards the noose and your eventual death. That does sound pretty unlucky. However others believe the origins of Friday 13th come from the Bible as many important events are said to have occurred on this date, such as the first day of flood during Noahs Ark, Eve eating the forbidden fruit from the garden of Eden and of course, who could forget, Jesus’ untimely death occurred on a Friday and his betrayal came from Judas, the 13th member of the last supper party.
Whether you believe all of that stuff is for another day, but these things did actually happen on Friday 13th;
1) Famous Births
Alfred Hitchcock, Grand Wizzard of the KKK Nathan Bedford Forrest, Fidel Casto and perhaps scariest of all, the Olson Twins were all born on Friday the 13th. It has been reported that Marget Thatcher was born on Friday the 13th but she was in fact born on Tuesday 13th.
2) Famous Deaths
Tupac Shakur is probably the most high-profile death on Friday 13th. He was shot in his car leaving a boxing match. Well, that's if you do believe he is dead…..
3) The murder of Kitty Genovese
The murder of Kitty Genovese occurred on Friday 13th. It was made famous after a newspaper published an article suggesting there were over 30 witnesses to her murder who turned a blind eye. If you're interested in finding out more about this there is a documentary all about the case on Netflix ready for you to binge.
4) The UK's Unluckiest Man
Staying in bed watching Netflix might be a good idea if you're suspicious. It was the decision made by Bob Renphrey who had had so much bad luck on Friday the 13th’s he refused to leave his bed. His bad luck included writing off four cars, falling into a river, amotorcyclee accident and even walked through a plate glass door. Bob’s bad luck didn't end when he died in 1998 however, his widow Betty tried to book his funeral for Friday 13th as a final tribute however everyone was fully booked. Betty laughed it off for the irony of it all. Poor Bob and Betty.
5) Daz Baxter's flat collapsed
Staying in bed didn't help Daz Baxter though. Daz tried to avoid bad luck by staying in his flat on Friday the 13th 1976. However, in a freak accident, the floor in his flat collapsed leaving him to fall six story's to his death.
6) Boy is struck by lightening at bizzare time
Another one that sounds too crazy to be true but actually is true is that in 2010 a boy was struck by lightning at exactly 13:13PM on Friday the 13th. How someone is so sure of the minute I’m not too certain…
7) The crash of Flight 571
Probably the most gruesome on this list, is the story of Flight 571, which crashed on the Andes mountains on Friday 13th October 1972. Of the 27 people who survived the crash 11 died of their injuries before, after two whole months on the mountain, the 16 surviving members were rescued. With limited food, the survivors resorted to cannibalism to survive.
And one for the future...
It's probably not worth worrying too much about Friday the 13th because, according to scientists, we’re all going to die on Friday 13th April 2029. The is the projected day when an asteroid is on due to hit earth. That is, of course an overstatement, the asteroid is projected to not even touch Earth. - Still, it makes a cool ending to the article, right?
